Students participating in Hands-On Civics

On Monday, March 2, Ms. Drmacich and Ms. Browne’s took around 30 students from their Gov/Econ classes to the Thurgood Marshall U.S. Courthouse in Manhattan for a day of hands-on civic learning. (This is the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit of the Southern District of New York). During the visit, students observed a live appellate court proceeding involving First and Fourth Amendment issues, giving them the opportunity to see Constitutional law in action.

Students also met with a U.S. Assistant Attorney and a U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge, who shared insights about their careers and the role of the federal courts. The trip concluded with a fun and engaging mock trial in which students debated whether Prince Charming stole Cinderella’s glass slipper. The experience allowed students to connect classroom learning about the Constitution and the judicial system to real-world legal processes.
